Frieze of Tholos in Sanctuary of Athena

Abstract

A detail showing the intricate frieze at the top of the tholos. While reconstructed, the frieze was based on fragments found, and shows the detail and artistry of the marblework.

Description

A detailed view of the reconstructed frieze and columns of the tholos at the Sanctuary of Athena. The metopes pictured are some of the 80 original metopes that decorated the top of both the inner and outer rings of columns. Atop these metopes, we see intricately carved gutters and acroteria, featuring lotus and acanthus motifs. The tholos was constructed in 390 BCE and was the first peristyle tholos of its kind, inspiring others of similar form at Epidauros (DM), Olympia (DJ), and Samothrace. The reconstructions were performed in 1938, replicating and completing excavated fragments of the frieze.
