Christian Block in Roman Marketplace

Abstract

A stone block inscribed with a cross, formerly on display in the Roman Marketplace at Delphi. Christian influence at Delphi is responsible for much of the destruction of the site, as bronze or gold was melted down and stone was removed to build the town.

Description

A stone block bearing an inscribed cross, sitting in the stoa at the Roman Marketplace. Christianity had a huge impact on Delphi, and the early Christian community used many raw materials from ancient structures in constructing their town. Churches also sprang up around the area, including one at the Castalian Spring (DH.21). This block of stone was part of a display of column fragments and similar carved pieces that lined the area of the stoa (see DH.23), but all have since been removed.
