Mosque of Muhammad Ali

Abstract

A view of the interior court of the Mosque of Muhammad Ali.

Description

The mosque's initial plans "were designed by Pascal Coste, a Frenchman who from 1818– 27 was Muhammad ‘Ali’s chief engineer and architect, but were abandoned when Coste left Egypt. In 1832 the mosque was started again on Coste’s foundations, this time in an Ottoman style, probably the work of a Greek master" (Williams, 226). Since the date of its original construction, the mosque has gone through multiple procedures of repair, in particular the replacement of its main domes in the 1930s. -MA
