View of the northwest iwan of the Friday Mosque at Saveh. The treatment of the transverse vault is one of the more ingenious characteristics of this mosque. The ‘vault within the vault’ gives the building an air of majesty. The interior is also richly shadowed by semi-domical vaults imposed on each other, which were at some point filled with stalactites now fallen away.
