Friday Mosque, Saveh

Description

A view of the mihrab in polychrome relief stucco. This “glory of the mosque” has ornament that is almost exactly similar to Persian miniatures. The large medallion in the tympanum surrounded by scrolling vines is one example. Another is the innermost band framing the niche proper, which consists of cartouches filled with spiral vines painted in blue on white. Pope thus writes that the design must have been prepared by a book illuminator or a carpet designer. The mihrab seems to have undergone considerable damage later in the 1960s.
