Friday Mosque, Yazd

Abstract

A view of the entrance iwan and minarets from the inside, showing glazed brick work gleaming in the sunlight.

Description

Although the Friday Mosque at Yazd is dated to Ilkhanid times, the present structure is strictly from the 14th century. This magnificent iwan was added in the reign of Shahrukh, with its minarets ranking as the tallest in Iran. The patterns and decorations are mainly Muzaffarid in origin, but refined considerably by the Timurids.
