Seville Judaria

Abstract

A beautifully carved wooden door in Juderia, Seville.

Description

The Patio de Banderas in the streets of the Juderia, or the Jewish quarter of Seville. The Juderia, known today as the Santa Cruz, is one of the top tourist destinations in Seville. Jews and Muslims maintained a peaceful co-existence under Muslim rule, where Jews and Christians had privileged status as “People of the Book.” However, when Ferdinand III of Castile conquered the city from Muslim rule, he moved the Jews to the Juderia, and after the Alhambra decree of 1492, the Jews were expelled from Spain. -SK

Image Notes

Photograph created March 5th, 1974. Photograph processed June 1974. Formerly catalogued as B49.106, CR.032. Notes written on the slide or index: Seville, Judaria.

Curator Notes

This slide is a Kodak Ektachrome, which uses a different coloring system from the Kodachrome slides that compose the vast majority of the collection. The slide also has three crossed out titles, reading Cordoba, Seville, and Cordoba. This indicates that there may have been confusion over the site depicted, causing it to be relabelled several times.
