Madrasa Is’ardiyya

Abstract

Detail of the south façade of the Madrasa Is'ardiyya.

Description

A view of the façade of the assembly hall in the Is’ardiyya (alternate angle in A.76). The dominant feature of the façade is the cantilevered mihrab salient in the center of this image. This is a unique form in the architecture of Jerusalem. It is capped by a ribbed dome and rests on muqarnas corbelling. On each side of the mihrab are two windows, one taller and wider than the other; the windows are set in shallow muqarnas-headed recesses.
